The story behind our March 17th program
San Patricio Battalion: A Fight for Justice
The San Patricio Battalion was a group of Irish and German Catholic immigrants who fought for Mexico during the U.S.- Mexico War (1846–1848). Originally in the U.S. Army, they defected due to religious discrimination and opposition to slavery.
They distinguished themselves in battles like Monterrey, Buena Vista, and Churubusco (1847), where many were captured. The U.S. Army punished them harshly—whipping, branding, and publicly executing many.
The San Patricios rejected U.S. expansionism and its ties to slavery, siding with Mexico’s fight for sovereignty and freedom. Today, they are honored in Mexico and Ireland, with monuments, ceremonies, and commemorative stamps recognizing their sacrifice.
